# The baseline sheet: write the numbers down before you change anything

Every website change is judged afterwards by someone who cannot remember the before. This is the before, on one page, in twenty minutes.

## What is inside

- The nine numbers that describe a website's enquiry performance, and why these nine.
- Where each one lives in Google Analytics 4 and Search Console, click by click.
- The same-period rule, so the after is compared with the right before.
- A table to paste into a document or a chat, with the date on it.

## Who it is for

- Anyone about to launch a redesign, a new landing page or a paid campaign.
- Marketing managers who will be asked in three months whether it worked.
- Agencies who want a baseline in the file before the work starts, so the review is fair to both sides.

## Why nine numbers and not a dashboard

A dashboard shows everything and proves nothing, because nobody remembers what it showed before. A baseline is a small set of numbers, written down with a date, that you agree to compare against later. Nine is enough to answer the three questions a director asks: are more people arriving, are more of them enquiring, and is the enquiry coming from the channel we paid for. Each number below is a count, not a rate, unless it says otherwise. Rates are worked out later, when you know both counts are measured on the same pages.
