The best CRO tools in 2026, and which question each one answers

CRO tools do five different jobs: measure, observe, diagnose, test and research. Here is which question each tool answers, what is free, and what each vendor publishes about price, checked on 30 September 2026.

The short answer

The best CRO tool for most marketing teams in 2026 is not a single product but a sequence: Google Analytics 4 for measurement, Microsoft Clarity or Hotjar for behaviour, an audit to find what is broken, then a testing platform once traffic justifies it. Adding tools is not the problem to solve. Gartner's marketing technology survey found marketers use only 33% of their martech stack's capabilities. Using the right one well is.

What are CRO tools?

CRO tools are software that helps a team increase the share of visitors who take a valuable action, such as enquiring or buying. They either measure behaviour (analytics, heatmaps, session recordings, surveys), diagnose problems (audits and usability research), or test changes (A/B testing platforms and landing page builders). Each type answers a different question.

That distinction matters. Most "best CRO tools" lists rank products against each other as if they compete. Many do not. Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity answer different questions and work well together. An A/B testing platform and an audit tool are not substitutes either: one tells you which of two versions wins, the other tells you what to change in the first place.

Which CRO tools should a marketing team consider in 2026?

A marketing team should consider one tool per question: GA4 for what happened, Microsoft Clarity or Hotjar for how people behaved, an audit such as PostCliq for what is broken and what to fix first, Unbounce for campaign landing pages, a testing platform such as Convert, VWO or Optimizely for which version wins, and Baymard-style research for proven patterns.

Every free tier, trial and price below was checked on the vendor's own pricing or product page on 30 September 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a price, we say so rather than guess. Prices change often, so check before you buy.

Which CRO tools are free?

Google Analytics 4 and Microsoft Clarity are free, and together they cover measurement and behaviour for most sites. Hotjar, through Contentsquare, and Crazy Egg offer limited free plans. PostCliq's website audit is free. Testing platforms generally offer trials rather than free plans, so budget for testing only when you are ready to run tests.

The free tools are also the most widely installed, which means many teams already have the data and are not reading it.

Microsoft is explicit about Clarity's cost.

Free forever. Built to grow with your business. No limits on traffic.

Microsoft Clarity product page, September 2026

That changes the budget conversation. "We cannot see what users do" is no longer a spending problem. It is a time and interpretation problem. Our Microsoft Clarity guide covers how to read the recordings for enquiry problems, and Microsoft Clarity vs Hotjar compares the two directly.

What does each type of CRO tool do well?

Analytics tools count outcomes across all traffic. Behaviour tools show individual sessions and patterns on a page. Audit tools list what is broken or missing and rank it. Testing tools prove which version wins. Research libraries tell you what has already been proven elsewhere. The mistake is using one to answer another's question.

Analytics: Google Analytics 4

GA4 is the measurement layer. It tells you how many sessions arrived, from which channels, which pages they reached and how many completed a key event such as an enquiry. It does not tell you why a page underperforms. It is only as good as its setup, and missing key events are common. Our GA4 audit checklist covers the checks that find missing enquiries.

Behaviour: Microsoft Clarity, Hotjar and Crazy Egg

These tools record sessions and build heatmaps. Clarity is free with no traffic limits and includes AI summaries of sessions. Hotjar is now sold within Contentsquare, whose free plan lists 200,000 monthly sessions and adds surveys. Crazy Egg combines heatmaps, recordings and simple A/B testing on paid plans. All three show what happened on a page, but watching recordings takes time, and they will not tell you which problem matters most. See our round-up of Hotjar alternatives for more options.

Diagnosis: PostCliq and manual audits

An audit answers the question the other tools leave open: what is wrong, and in what order should we fix it? PostCliq is a free website audit from WP Creative. It reads up to 50 public pages the way a careful visitor would, across speed and page experience, forms and calls to action, content clarity, search access, accessibility, trust signals and AI readiness, then gives a private report with evidence and three quick wins to make first. GA4, Search Console and Clarity connect read-only. It does not run tests, record sessions or change your site. The features page lists each check.

Landing pages: Unbounce

Unbounce builds campaign landing pages without a developer, with A/B testing from its Experiment plan upwards. It answers a paid-media question: would this campaign convert better on a dedicated page than on the website? Its own 2024 benchmark puts the median landing page conversion rate at 6.6%, a useful reference for campaign pages built on its platform.

Testing: Convert, VWO and Optimizely

Testing platforms split traffic between versions and measure the difference. Convert publishes its prices and bills by tested users. VWO has merged with AB Tasty under the Wingify brand, offering experimentation alongside behaviour analytics. Optimizely serves large programmes and prices each plan individually. All three answer "which version wins", and all three need traffic. Optimizely's own data shows only 12% of experiments produce a significant win. Our guide to A/B testing for marketing teams shows the sample-size arithmetic.

Research: Baymard Institute

Research libraries answer "has this already been proven?" Baymard Institute reports more than 200,000 hours of user testing behind more than 700 UX guidelines, with free articles and a paid Premium service. It is ecommerce focused, but its findings on forms, trust and navigation apply to many B2B sites. Using proven research saves you testing what others have already tested.

How do you choose the right CRO tool?

Choose a CRO tool by writing down the question you cannot answer today, then picking the cheapest tool that answers it. If you do not know what happened, fix analytics. If you do not know why, add behaviour recording. If you do not know what to fix first, run an audit. If you know what to change but not which version wins, test.

A simple decision path for a B2B marketing team:

  1. Can you trust your enquiry numbers? If not, start with GA4 and fix key events before anything else.
  2. Do you know where visitors give up? If not, install Microsoft Clarity. It is free.
  3. Do you know what to fix first? If not, run an audit. Our CRO audit guide shows a one-hour method, and PostCliq automates much of it.
  4. Is your paid traffic landing on the right page? If not, consider a landing page builder.
  5. Do you have a genuine question and enough traffic to answer it? Only then add a testing platform.

A worked example of cost. A team that buys Convert's entry plan at USD 299 a month billed annually spends USD 3,588 a year before any test runs. If its key page converts 2% of 3,000 monthly sessions, a reliable test of a 20% lift takes about 14 months. That team is paying for a tool on which it can finish fewer than one meaningful test a year. The same team could install Clarity, run a free audit and fix its enquiry path for nothing but time. The arithmetic changes completely for a page with 50,000 monthly sessions.

Do you need a paid CRO tool at all?

Most small and mid-sized B2B teams do not need a paid CRO tool to start. GA4, Microsoft Clarity and a free audit cover measurement, behaviour and diagnosis. Pay for testing when a page has the traffic to reach reliable results, and for research access when your team designs complex journeys such as checkouts or quote builders.

Where paid tools earn their place:

  • High-traffic paid campaigns, where a landing page builder with testing lets marketers move without developer time.
  • Ecommerce checkouts, where small conversion differences are worth a lot and traffic supports testing.
  • Mature experimentation programmes, where the team runs tests every month and needs governance and statistics.

For Australian teams, note that almost every price above is in USD. A USD bill moves with the exchange rate, so budget with a margin.

What to do next

  1. Write down the one conversion question you cannot answer today.
  2. Check GA4 records every enquiry as a key event. If it does not, fix that first.
  3. Install Microsoft Clarity on your key pages and watch ten sessions that ended without an enquiry.
  4. Run a free PostCliq website audit to see what is broken and what to fix first, with evidence.
  5. Work through the CRO audit method, then fix your enquiry path using our contact form best practices.
  6. Only then decide whether a testing platform is worth its annual cost for your traffic.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free CRO tool?

For most sites the best free combination is Google Analytics 4 for measurement and Microsoft Clarity for behaviour, which Microsoft says is free with no traffic limits. Add a free audit, such as PostCliq, to turn that data into a ranked list of fixes. Hotjar through Contentsquare and Crazy Egg also offer limited free plans.

What is the difference between CRO tools and A/B testing tools?

A/B testing tools are one type of CRO tool. They split traffic between versions and measure which converts better. Other CRO tools measure outcomes, record behaviour, diagnose problems or supply research. Testing proves which option wins; the other tools tell you what to change and why. Low-traffic sites usually get more value from the diagnostic tools first.

Is Hotjar still available in 2026?

Yes, but it is now sold as part of Contentsquare. Hotjar's pricing page redirects to Contentsquare's, which lists a free plan with 200,000 monthly sessions and paid tiers above it. The core features of heatmaps, recordings and surveys remain. Check Contentsquare's pricing page for current paid prices in your currency.

What happened to VWO?

VWO and AB Tasty have merged under the Wingify brand. VWO's website now redirects to Wingify, which describes a combined platform for experimentation, personalisation and behaviour analytics, with a 30-day free trial. Pricing is not published on the page. If you use VWO today, check with the vendor how plans and contracts carry over.

Does Google have a free A/B testing tool?

No. Google Optimize and Optimize 360 stopped being available on 30 September 2023. GA4 can measure the results of a test run elsewhere, but it does not split traffic itself. Teams now use a paid testing platform, a landing page builder with testing, or server-side testing built by developers.

Does PostCliq replace Hotjar or Google Analytics?

No. PostCliq is a free website audit, not an analytics or recording tool. It reads your public pages and reports what stops visitors becoming enquiries, with evidence and quick wins. It works alongside GA4 and Microsoft Clarity, and connects to both read-only. It does not record sessions, run A/B tests or change your site.
